Five men have been rescued uninjured from waters off Kangaroo Island after their fishing boat was struck by a large wave and capsized.

A search was launched off Cape Willoughby on Wednesday night after a flare was spotted and an emergency beacon activated.

The men were found soon after by an RAAF Orion clinging to the hull of their upturned boat.

They were picked up by another fishing boat in the area and then transferred to the Kangaroo Island ferry, which was diverted to the scene.

The men, aged 35 to 45, were checked for hypothermia and given the all-clear while their six-metre boat was towed to shore.
