Man in custody over South Australian sex worker murder

The father of a baby has withdrawn his bail application in relation to a charge of murdering a Sydney sex worker whose body was found in an Adelaide hotel room.

Chungaung Piao, 27, of Allenby Gardens, is charged with murdering Ting Fang, 25, whose body was found in a room at the Grand Chancellor Hotel in the city centre on New Year's Day.

He first appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates court on January 12 when his lawyer indicated he would be applying for release on home detention bail, an application opposed by prosecutor Lucy Boord.

She said both Ms Fang's internal and external jugular veins were cut.

Police at the time said she had been in Adelaide for three or four days.

The court was previously told that Piao, a Chinese national on a bridging visa, is married with an eight-month old baby and has been in Australia for the past four years.

Piao appeared in the magistrates court again today, when his lawyer Julian Kelly withdrew the bail application.

Ms Boord said she had advised Mr Kelly in more detail of the strength of the prosecution case.

Magistrate Luke Davis adjourned the matter to March 31, saying Piao could make a fresh bail application in the future.
