An Adelaide man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder after he allegedly tried to set fire to a gas bottle before throwing it at a police car, smashing the front windscreen.

Two officers were in the car at the time with one suffering minor cuts.

The patrol vehicle had gone to a house in suburban Huntfield Heights on Saturday night after reports of a car driving erratically on the Southern Expressway.

There they were confronted by a 36-year-old who allegedly tried to light the 9kg gas bottle before flinging it at their car.

The man allegedly lit a fire on the porch of a nearby house before he was arrested.

During a search of the man's house police seized a body armour vest and a number of chemicals and glassware.

Police also say they found a firearm in the man's car.

The man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of assault along with possessing supplies to manufacture an explosive device, possessing body armour and carrying a weapon.

He has been refused bail and will appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on Monday.
