Magistrate named SA's new coroner

Adelaide magistrate David Whittle has been named South Australia's next coroner.

Mr Whittle will replace Mark Johns who will retire at the end of August.

He will work as a deputy coroner from July 15 before taking over from Mr Johns on September 1.

Acting Attorney-General Rob Lucas said Mr Whittle had served the magistrates court with distinction over the past 10 years.

"I am confident he will be able to approach his new duties with the independence, sensitivity and rigour he has applied to all his work in the past," Mr Lucas said.

He said Mr Johns had investigated a number of highly complex and deeply tragic cases.

"The government acknowledges his absolute commitment to the job, cutting to the heart of the matter and striving to make recommendations that can ensure we learn from the mistakes of the past by improving our systems," Mr Lucas said.

Mr Johns will go on leave from the court next month before officially retiring from his position at the end of August.
