Livestock losses mount from SA fires

Stock losses from recent bushfires across South Australia are closing in on 6000 animals but authorities say the number is likely to rise.

Agricultural and Animal Services state controller Mehdi Doroudi says 5790 animals have been confirmed lost so far.

But that number doesn't include potential losses from fires still burning, he said, including the large blaze on Kangaroo Island.

"We are still conducting ongoing assessments with affected registered producers from the Keilira fire in the southeast and the Kangaroo Island complex of fires," Mr Doroudi said.

"As we gather further information we anticipate that the total number of stock losses may unfortunately increase."

Professor Doroudi said that while information was still coming in, the Adelaide Hills fire had also impacted grape, apple, cherry and hazelnut production to varying degrees.

And there were reports of damage to apiaries in the Hills, on Kangaroo Island and in the southeast.
