Adelaide Fringe reveals 2017 line-up

Next year's Fringe Festival in Adelaide will feature more than 1100 acts, making it the biggest ever, organisers say.

More than 5250 artists will be part of comedy, music, theatre, circus and other shows across 400 venues, with Adelaide Oval among 100 new venues in 2017.

But the festival has not shied away from its tradition of curating a line-up from "the bottom up", with shows of all shapes and sizes embraced.

"We're like the Facebook of festivals or the Twitter of festivals," chief executive Heather Croall told an excited crowd at Adelaide bar The Henry Austin, another of the new venues, on Friday.

"If you want to get on, just sign up and get on board. That's why the diversity is amazing."

Croall said the city's Fringe had grown to become the biggest arts festival in Australia after selling about 600,000 tickets in 2016, up from 200,000 in 2010.

She said the next event would include several acts that were a hit at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, including a production of Trainspotting, to be staged underground in the Station Arcade.

Despite the big acts on offer, she urged people to check out the shows with less fanfare.

"Be adventurous because the more adventurous you are the more likely it is that fringe will change your life," she said.

The Fringe runs from February 17 to March 19.
