She has spent a lot of time in court as South Australia's first female chief magistrate, so to mark her departure from the top job, Elizabeth Bolton will sit one last time.

A special sitting will be held at Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday for Ms Bolton, who announced her retirement in July because of illness after eight years as chief magistrate.

Ms Bolton, 64, began her career as a judge's associate in the Supreme Court before working as a solicitor, a prosecutor, a magistrate and, later, a judge of the District Court.
