Labor's Kate Ellis to quit parliament

* Born in Melbourne and grew up in Mannum, east of Adelaide, where she was a primary school teacher.

* Elected to federal parliament in 2004 in the seat of Adelaide, defeating Liberal Trish Worth.

* Named minister for youth and sport after Labor's 2007 election victory.

* Served across a range of portfolios, including early childhood education, childcare and youth, the status of woman and employment participation.

* Now the opposition spokeswoman for early childhood education and development.

* Married to former newspaper editor and Adelaide radio personality David Penberthy. They have a son Sam who is about to turn two.
