A racehorse has been euthanised after breaking down in a jumps event at Murray Bridge, east of Adelaide.

The RSPCA says four-year-old gelding Surface to Air broke down before the second to last of 11 hurdles in the 3280m race on Wednesday.

It says the horse appeared to break a hind leg and was clearly struggling with the distance of the event.

The RSPCA said the death was the second involving a jumps horse in South Australia so far this year.

It reaffirmed calls for Thoroughbred Racing SA to end all jumps racing across the state.

"We urge TRSA to withdraw jumps events from future racing programs and we encourage members of the public to get on board and take action to help bring an end to this senseless and cruel activity," RSPCA animal welfare advocate Rebekah Eyers said.
