ICAC probe into SA safety group underway

Staff at SafeWork SA have been urged to provide statements and comments about the operation of the safety watchdog as part of an anti-corruption investigation.

SA's Independent Commissioner Against Corruption Bruce Lander is inquiring into the practices and policies of SafeWork SA after a number of complaints.

On Tuesday he released the scope of his evaluation, which will include if proper safeguards are in place to prevent the abuse of discretionary powers given to SafeWork SA's inspectors and investigators.

Mr Lander said he had also recently requested a range of documents from SafeWork SA and scheduled the first public hearing of his inquiry on June 1.

It'll be the first time the commissioner has conducted any of his work in public.

Announcing his investigation earlier this month, Mr Lander said it would consider what changes could be made to minimise the potential for corruption, misconduct or maladministration within the agency.

His move came a week after he announced a separate investigation into SafeWork SA following the failed prosecution of a safety inspection company over the 2014 death of a young girl on a Royal Adelaide Show ride.

Adelene Leong, aged eight, was on holidays from Malaysia when she was fatally thrown from the "AirMaxx 360" ride.
