South Australian parents are being urged to prepare now for summer through the National Kids Alive program, which offers children under five one free swimming lesson.
Fifteen children under the age of five drowned in Australia last year, with 40 per cent of those fatalities being children under the age of one.
But the cost of swimming lessons can be a barrier for parents, with just one lesson at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre costing more than $25.

"We know that if we offer a free swimming lesson, that will help, and that's part of an eight-week program, and when you combine that with children over five who can get the sport voucher, that's four free swimming lessons," said Adam Luscombe, general manager of the SA Aquatic Centre.
The program also includes five free online lessons, accessible through the Kids Alive app, providing additional resources for water safety education.
