As the clean-up continues after a deadly blaze north of Adelaide, South Australia is bracing for several days of severe fire risk.

The mercury in Adelaide will hit 35 degrees on Friday before climbing to 40 degrees over the weekend and remaining in the mid-30s until Tuesday.

Temperatures in some regional centres, particularly the state's north, will reach the high-30s on Friday and into the mid-40s over the weekend before returning to the mid-to-high 30s on Monday.

Total fire bans have been declared for Friday in the northwest pastoral and west coast regions, with forecasts of severe fire danger.

Moderate to fresh winds moving east during the heatwave are not expected to add to the risk, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

The State Emergency Service says the elderly, young children and manual labourers are particularly vulnerable to dehydration and heat-stroke.
