Horror month on SA roads with 18 dead

During what police have described as a "horrific" month on South Australian roads, 18 people have died.

An average of eight people die on the state's roads each month but 13 died in regional SA and five in Adelaide in October.

Road accidents claimed the lives of 107 people last year and 88 people so far this year, police statistics show.

Motorcyclists driving dangerously and drivers using phones will be targeted ahead of the holiday season.

"Taking your eyes off the road for just one second means you have driven 16 metres blind," Superintendent Anthony Fioravanti said.

"A lot can happen in one second and 16 metres."

There will also be a crackdown on drivers speeding on country roads and those not wearing seatbelts.
