Adelaide’s Henley Square to become smoke-free from next week

Adelaide’s Henley Square will become smoke-free from Monday, as the State Government seeks to reduce passive smoke consumption in public places.

Under the new regulations, introduced in conjunction with the City of Charles Sturt, people will not be able to smoke in the vicinity at any time.

The council will carry out a community education campaign to ensure visitors and locals are aware of the smoke-free status and signage will also be erected in and around the square.

Public opinion favoured the ban, which received 89 percent support from 314 respondents.  

Eighty-eight percent also said they would be more likely to visit the square if it were smoke free.

“The health effects of direct and passive smoking are well known, and to have our community respond with 89 percent support of the precinct becoming smoke-free is a fantastic result,” City of Charles Sturt Mayor Angela Evans said.

The South Australian Government has already moved to place bans on smoking in a number of public spaces, including outdoor dining areas.

Anyone found smoking in a declared smoke-free area can be fined up to $200.
