A heatwave across Adelaide and South Australia has prompted police to deploy more resources to help keep New Year's Eve revellers safe.

Police will have a strong visible presence at all the major celebrations, including those at Elder Park in the city, seaside Glenelg and various country locations.

With Adelaide and many regional centres expected to have top temperatures in the high 30s or early 40s on Thursday, conditions are expected to remain warm throughout the night.

Assistant Commissioner Bronwyn Killmier urged all partygoers to take responsibility for their own behaviour.

"Anti-social behaviour, or disorderly behaviour due to excessive consumption of alcohol and drugs will not be tolerated," she said.

"Police will move in quickly, so think before you try and spoil the party."
