Grandmother's kidnap case dropped

Charges have been dropped against a grandmother accused of involvement in kidnapping and smuggling to Malaysia her two-year-old grandson.

The 52-year-old grandmother and the boy's 64-year-old grandfather had been charged with aiding and abetting his parents, who flew to Malaysia with him in August last year.

The boy was under the guardianship of the Minister for Education and Child Department but lived with his Adelaide grandparents.

The parents, now 27 and 24, were extradited from Malaysia and charged with an aggravated count of unlawfully removing a child from a jurisdiction.

On Thursday in the Adelaide magistrates court, prosecutors dropped the charge against the grandmother.

They also withdrew the charges against the other three, replacing them with aggravated counts of failing to comply with a care and protection order, and sending or taking a child out of the jurisdiction.

The trio will return to court on March 12.
