A gang of five men have stormed an Adelaide apartment and assaulted three occupants with machetes.

Two of the occupants were slashed while the third was stabbed in the chest. They've been treated in hospital for non-life threatening lacerations.

The attack happened just after 1am on Friday, when the men forced their way into the apartment at Glenbrook Close, Marden.

The gang fled but police believe they were known to the occupants.

A neighbour said she heard the commotion but didn't think much of it because the occupants are often noisy.

"They're quite rowdy and they run up and down the stairs all the time," she told reporters on Friday.

"I thought, `noise again', and I turned over and went back to sleep."

Ms Tancock said one of the people living at the apartment was "a nice young man".

"He's had a hard life but tries to do the right thing," she said.

Police say two of the assailants wielded machetes and one was believed to be armed with a handgun.

The suspects are described as being in their late teens to early twenties, all wearing dark clothes and one had a full face beard.
