Former-AFL player guilty of SA MP assault

A former South Australian football player has been found guilty of assaulting the state's parliamentary Speaker by hurling a bucket of water over him.

Dave Granger, 60, who played more than 100 games for Port Adelaide in the SANFL in the 1970s and 1980s and three games for St Kilda, represented himself in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He arrived at court wearing a white potty on his head and carrying the bucket he used in the alleged attack on MP Michael Atkinson in March last year.

Mr Atkinson told the court he was letterboxing in his electorate on his bike when Granger shouted abuse and tipped the water over him.

Granger was found guilty of one basic count of assault and placed on a two-year good behaviour bond.

He was also ordered to pay $420 in prosecution costs and victims of crime levy.
