Innovative system to check food trucks are meeting health standards

Authorities are trialling a new way of monitoring whether South Australian food trucks are meeting health and safety requirements.

SA Health told 9NEWS the new passport system gives vendors a single document to show evidence of when and where they were last inspected.

It’s hoped it will remove the current red-tape that requires businesses to complete onerous inspections in each council area they operate in.

“We wanted the community to be comfortable that the food trucks are being inspected,” SA Health’s Dr Fay Jenkins said.

“I think the passport should give the consumers comfort that these businesses are being inspected as often as fixed businesses.

“It’s good for both the trucks and the councils because it is reducing red-tape."

The move has been welcomed by operators, such as Rohendra Soza, who has run his food truck for three years. 

“It's amazing because at least it's one check, they get it done. It's much easier now,” Mr Soza said.

The trial is expected to be completed in February 2019, when a review will be conducted to determine whether the system will be implemented permanently.

Vendors that wish to be involved in the trial, are urged to contact their local council.
