Emergency services have established an exclusion zone after a large fire destroyed a petrol station at Riverton in South Australia’s mid-north.

Firefighters and police attended the scene about 6pm local time (6.30pm AEDT) and have since declared a 500m exclusion zone around the site, on the corner of Torrens Road and Hannaford Terrace.

The area is "dangerous" and the zone was established to protect nearby residents and assist authorities, SA Police Superintendent Scott Denny said.

"Police are assisting CFS (Country Fire Service), maintaining safe cordons and asking the public to avoid the area," he said.

The zone includes businesses and some homes.

Video footage shows petrol pumps and the service station engulfed by flames.

Torrens Road remains closed to all traffic.
