Fire bans and hot weather for SA

Total fire bans have been declared for South Australia with temperatures in some areas tipped to hit 40c.

Severe fire danger ratings are in place for Saturday for large parts of the state, and the CFS says very hazardous fire weather conditions are predicted.

State co-ordinator Brenton Eden has urged South Australians to postpone any activity that might spark a fire.

"Simple things like mowing grass over rocky, dry ground, vehicle exhausts, using an angle grinder, campfires and barbecues - even the simple act of using an electric drill in the wrong place - might just provide that spark which could be catastrophic," he said on Friday.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts a maximum temperature of 39c in Adelaide, reaching 40c in the northern suburb of Elizabeth.

Severe ratings are in place on Saturday for the fire ban districts of Northwest Pastoral, West Coast, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Mid North, Mount Lofty Ranges, Yorke Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Murraylands, Upper South East and Lower South East.
