Father killed in head-on crash with truck after celebrating cricket win

The family of a father-of-three who was killed last night when his ute collided head-on with a double road train have issued a plea for motorists to be vigilant.

Graeme Holmes, 49, has been described by his family as a loving husband and devoted father of three daughters.

He was killed last night when his ute collided head-on with a B-double on the Sturt Highway at Truro just after 10pm.

Paramedics tried desperately to save him but he died at the scene of the crash.

The truck driver was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Earlier in the day, the keen cricketer had been celebrating his team's first win of the season.

He dropped his youngest daughter, Emma, 19, off at their Stockwell home before making the short trip to Truro to watch cricket on television at a mate's place.

Sadly, he never returned home.

His sudden death has rocked the tight-night community of Stockwell.

"I still think he's going to come down the driveway, and come and say hello," Mr Holmes' daughter, Brittany, told 9NEWS.

"I honestly could not have asked for a better father."

Ms Holmes has a message for other users that travel along the Sturt Highway - a key route for trucks transporting goods from Adelaide to Sydney.

"Just be vigilant on the roads because it's not just you on the road, there's others out there that have a different story," she said.

"One mistake and it could be over."
