More than 70 Families SA carers have been cleared to return to work after an audit questioned their suitability for working with children.

The agency suspended 25 residential carers from working one-on-one with children in October, following an audit of internal staff records by former Police Commissioner Mal Hyde.

A further 77 were identified as being of "high concern".

Child Development Minister Jennifer Rankine says 73 of the 102 workers identified in the audit have now been cleared to return to work.

Four have resigned, a further four are off work due to worker's compensation claims and 21 are subject to ongoing assessment.

Ms Rankine said it was vital to have the right people caring for children who had experienced significant trauma.
