An 86-year-old man has died after his mobility scooter was struck by a garbage truck in Adelaide this morning.

The man collided with the truck on Currie Street just before 7.30am, causing traffic chaos as police stopped westbound traffic between King William Street and Light Square.

In the city, it’s a low speed area so these sorts of accidents just shouldn’t happen,” a witness told 9NEWS.

Walking to work, and then you just see that happening in the morning, it’s so sad,” another witness said.

The man was from Grange, a coastal suburb of the city.

The crash brings the South Australia road toll to 16 for the year so far.

Currie Street remains closed more than four hours after the incident.

Commuters stuck in the traffic chaos began tweeting photos showing the gridlock.
