Dutch DNA experts helping solve SA bombing

Dutch DNA experts could hold the key to a breakthrough in the investigation into the bombing of the National Crime Authority office in Adelaide more than 20 years ago.

South Australia's Police Commissioner Grant Stevens has met with the heads of the Netherlands Forensic Institute as part of a renewed investigation into the parcel bomb that killed Detective Sergeant Geoffrey Bowen in 1994.

This comes almost two months after SA police received "critical" and previously unknown information from a CrimeStoppers caller about the bombing.

The Netherlands institute, regarded as being at the forefront of DNA technology, recently gave evidence during the trial of Dieter Pfennig, 67, accused of killing schoolgirl Louise Bell in 1983.

"Commissioner Stevens had detailed discussions with senior staff members regarding the opportunity for the institute to conduct further work on behalf of South Australia," acting assistant commissioner Tom Osborn said in a statement on Tuesday.

Adelaide man Domenic Perre was arrested over Det Sgt Bowen's murder but charges were dropped six months later because of a lack of evidence.

A new taskforce into the bombing, which also seriously injured lawyer Peter Wallis, was established in April to concentrate on witnesses who had previously fabricated or withheld information.

A $1 million reward for information that leads to a conviction remains in place.
