South Australia has become the first state to put laws in place to allow trials of driverless cars.

Companies looking to develop the technology will simply have to submit plans for any proposed trials and have sufficient insurance in place.

"South Australia is now positioned to become a key player in this emerging industry and by leading the charge, we are opening up countless new opportunities for our businesses and our economy," Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan said on Thursday.
