Deadly party drug seized in NSW and SA

A 21-year-old Adelaide man is facing drug trafficking charges after police seized more than 10,000 tabs of a deadly party drug known as "wizard' or "25i", purchased via the internet.

The drug 25i-NBOMe, sold in tablet and blotter tab form, mimics the effects of ecstasy and LSD, but is much more powerful.

It has resulted in several deaths in South Australia.

The man's arrest last Friday came after a package containing 5008 blotter tabs of 25i-NBOMe was found at the international mail gateway in Sydney.

Police then raided a house in the southern Adelaide suburb of Morphett Vale, where another 5717 tabs were found.

It's alleged the drugs, which have a street value of $220,000, were purchased online and sent to Australia from Canada.

The drugs, described by police as "highly toxic" are colloquially known as 'wizard' or '25i' and come in many colours and descriptions.

Users may experience hallucinations, psychosis, extreme aggression, elevated heart rate, seizures, nausea, neurological damage, organ damage and, in some cases, death.

Police have expressed concern some users are mistaking 25i-NBOMe for ecstasy or LSD, and getting more than they bargained for.

In South Australia, 25i-NBOME is reported to have contributed to several deaths and a large number of overdoses.

SA's Drug and Organised Crime Task Force chief, Detective Chief Inspector Steve Taylor, said law enforcement agencies were constantly monitoring the internet and checking postal items for illicit drugs.

The Morphett Vale man, who faces charges of trafficking in a large commercial quantity of drugs, has been bailed and will appear in the Christies Beach Magistrate Court on November 4th.
