Dastyari chastised for Adelaide sledge

NSW Senator Sam Dastyari has learnt his lesson - don't mess with Adelaide.

The Labor senator was forced to eat humble pie after sledging the city after the Western Sydney Wanderers' 3-1 loss to Adelaide United in the A-League grand final on Sunday.

"It must have been a tough week for Senator [Cory] Bernardi in Adelaide ... His city was overrun by halal-eating, drum-beating, Sydney-loving football fans," Senator Dastyari told the Liberal backbencher during question time on Monday.

"You may have won the A-League final but we get to go back to Sydney and you have to stay in Adelaide."

Senator Dastyari, who copped lectures from his Labor colleague SA Senator Penny Wong and even parliament house security guards, later conceded the joke was poor form.

"It was a bad attempt to try and be playful. You've got to understand we're all a bit sore here in Sydney," he told Adelaide's 5AA radio on Tuesday.

"You know you've done something wrong when [Member for Mayo] Jamie Briggs is able to have a go at you and he's right ... you've really hit the rock bottom of politics when that happens."

Senator Dastyari's apology came after SA Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis called his comments "silly and stupid".

He then took the age-old advice of picking on someone your own size, deflecting to a state he said both NSW and SA could bag together.

"There's so much more that unites us than divides us and that being, of course, our hatred of Melbourne," he quipped.
