Dust storm sweeps across Barossa Valley

A dust storm has swept through South Australia's Barossa Valley after heavy winds stirred the site of the Pinery bushfire.

Gusts of up to 93km/h were recorded in the nearby town of Roseworthy as thunderstorms arrived in parts of the state on Thursday afternoon.

Photos on social media showed large plumes of dust moving across the Barossa, whipped up from the site of the fire which claimed two lives in November.

Residents have been urged to drive safely and avoid going outdoors if they have respiratory conditions.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast severe thunderstorms for much of SA, with flash flooding possible in some areas.

Damaging winds up to 120km/h and rain are expected to hit areas including Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Pirie, Clare, Gawler and Jamestown.

Residents should secure loose items and move cars under cover, the State Emergency Service says.
