A man has captured the moment a great white shark circled his fishing boat and nibbled on his engine eight kilometres off North Haven in Adelaide.

David Kerr told 9news.com.au he was fishing yesterday morning at around 8.30am when the shark approached his boat.

The shark, estimated to be four-metres long, reportedly circled the boat for about five minutes before swimming off.

Mr Kerr said he was "startled" by the encounter but did not feel threatened by the shark.

"It was as curious of me as I was of it," he said.

"I’ve seen a few sharks before but this was the first time I was composed enough to get the camera."

Mr Kerr said he is completely opposed to shark culling and drum lining for sharks.

"They are king of the ocean - I’m just a guest," he said.
