Chimp gives birth after adopting orphan

A chimpanzee has given birth just weeks after adopting an orphan at a South Australian zoo.

Zombi's baby was born at Monarto Zoo southeast of Adelaide on Monday night.

"Zombi and her infant are doing well and the little male seems to be strong and healthy," senior veterinarian Dr Ian Smith said.

The baby has already been introduced to the extended family, with relatives "very inquisitive" about the new addition.

Weeks ago, Zombi surprised zookeepers by adopting baby Boon, whose mum Soona died giving birth.

Zookeepers took a dehydrated, lethargic and underweight Boon off Zombi's hands before she went into labour, but hope to reunite the fledgling family soon.
