Charges withdrawn against prison death man

Charges against an indigenous man who died after a violent altercation with prison guards in Adelaide have been withdrawn.

The 29-year-old, referred to only as Mr Morrison, died in hospital early Monday morning, sparking calls for an independent inquiry into the incident at the Yatala Labour Prison last week.

Rape, assault and criminal trespass charges against him came before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Thursday where the prosecution withdrew the files.

After his death, South Australian Correctional Services Minister Peter Malinauskas said Mr Morrison was alleged to have started a violent tussle with the guards while on remand and waiting for a scheduled court video link appearance.

He said the man's death was now being investigated by police and the coroner would also conduct an inquest.

But the man's family called for an independent investigation with the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement suggesting it be conducted by the Office of Public Integrity.
