Boost for SA businesses to go online

With COVID-19 restrictions in place, South Australian exporters are being encouraged to build an online presence and sell their products internationally under a new state government scheme.

Small-to-medium businesses with export-ready goods can apply for grants of up to $10,000 under the $500,000 eCommerce Accelerator Program.

The initiative will ensure business include an online platform to generate revenue and create jobs.

Trade and Investment Minister David Ridgway said the 'click and purchase' method of buying and selling prompted exporters to rethink how they built brand awareness and connected with overseas clientele.

About 8600 SA businesses had potential to export and nearly 1500 wholesalers could benefit from embracing e-commerce opportunities, according to the department.

"Innovation is the backbone of successful business and this program offers businesses the opportunity to adapt and change to the challenges presented by COVID-19," Mr Ridgway said.

"We recognise that for many exporters, this means a completely new approach to how they interact with existing and potential clients."

The Hamper Emporium owner Emily McWaters said she was looking to expand her luxury gifting business internationally and would not be able to operate without an e-commerce platform.

"The platform enables us to sell our products all over Australia - products that you won't find in a traditional retail outlet," Ms McWaters said.

"Through our online business model, we've seen fantastic growth since we launched 10 years ago.

"People are turning to online shopping to find new products whilst they shop from the comfort of their own homes - or even via their mobile phones on the commute to work."

In order to build business capability, successful applicants can put money towards selling products online via third-party platforms, undertaking training to develop their business models or commissioning digital marketing plans.
