Passing motorists found a body in a burnt-out car in regional South Australia.

Police are treating the death, at Parrakie, east of Adelaide near the Victorian border, as suspicious.

Superintendent Les Buckley said police found the car belonged to a local resident but the body was yet to be identified.

"We have some ideas about who the victim may be but we're unable to speculate at this stage because we haven't been able to formally identify the person," Supt Buckley told reporters at the scene.

Supt Buckley said the car was first sighted by a driver from a local trucking company at 4.40am on Wednesday, before passing motorists contacted police after seeing the body in the vehicle about 8am.

He said police believed the car was there overnight.
