An uncontrolled bushfire is burning in scrub along the Eyre Peninsula, prompting a watch and act message from the Country Fire Service (CFS).

Fire crews have warned the fire may threaten the safety of people near Lake Hamilton, south of Sheringa.

The fire is travelling west towards the Flinders Highway and Hillsea Homestead.

Residents have been warned to avoid the area and, if they are already there, to leave if it is safe to do so.

The fire started on Wednesday and reached 700 hectares in size by Friday.

A CFS spokeswoman said around 70 firefighters and two water bombers are battling the blaze with hopes to have it under control before the weekend's warm weather.
