A Comancheros bikie has been arrested after a newly-released prisoner was attacked with a metal pole and hammer in the public foyer of an Adelaide jail.

The man was assaulted by two disguised men, who ran away after the attack on Monday afternoon outside the Yatala Labour Prison.

The 22-year-old bikie, from Blakeview, has been refused bail and faces charges of assault and possessing prescription drugs.

The victim sustained injuries to his head, upper body and legs, police said.

They are looking for the second man and the weapons.

The attack was premeditated and involved "people waiting for this person to come out", Chief Superintendent Graham Goodwin told reporters on Thursday.

"They were obviously there to send a very clear message," he said.
