WHAT IT INVOLVED:

* Adult migrants were charged STG10 for their passage to Australia with children travelling for free.

* Successful applicants were obliged to stay for at least two years and could apply for Australian citizenship after one year.

* A return journey cost STG120.

HOW MANY CAME:

* More than one million British subjects from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Residents of British colonies such as Cyprus and Malta were also eligible.

* The program ran from 1945 to 1972 and peaked in 1969 when about 80,000 people migrated.
