With the coalition's imminent return to government, South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill says its first challenge will be saving troubled steelmaker Arrium.

Mr Weatherill says he's spoken with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to offer his congratulations on the coalition's narrow election victory.

He says the SA government will work with the commonwealth to advance the prosperity of South Australia.

The prime minister must also help Holden workers who will lose their job in October when the company ends production of the Cruze passenger car and should restore funds cut from health and education, he said.

"The election result has sent a clear message that the cuts to funding for schools and hospitals are unsustainable and must be addressed early in the life of this new government," the premier said.

With several seats still undecided the coalition looks likely to have either 76 or 77 in the next parliament.

One of those undecided seats is Hindmarsh in Adelaide where Labor leads by just a few hundred votes.
