Another hand up for Day seat in Senate

South Australian Family First MP Robert Brokenshire says he will join party staffer Rikki Lambert in vying to replace outgoing Senator Bob Day.

Senator Day quit parliament on Monday because of financial problems with his Home Australia Group, which has been placed in liquidation.

Mr Brokenshire, who holds a seat in SA's Legislative Council, told ABC radio on Tuesday he will contend the vacancy to give the party's executive ample choice.

"I've got a lot of energy and experience to offer," the dairy farmer said.

"Why wouldn't you have a go and put that experience that the community have invested into me into a higher level of government to ensure that we can work for the best interest of our state."

Lawyer and Family First parliamentary staffer Rikki Lambert was the first to declare an interest in replacing Senator Day.

He said he was originally selected to run second on the SA Family First Senate ticket at the last election but withdrew when it became a double dissolution.

"I didn't want to distract from what was then, once the double dissolution came, a campaign about Bob Day and not a campaign about Rikki Lambert," he told ABC radio.

"I feel I'm just getting started after my 10-year apprenticeship with Family First."

Mr Lambert said he would review the party's policies if he became a senator but has vowed to support the government's crackdown on building unions.

Another possible candidate for the Senate vacancy is Kenyan-born lawyer Lucy Gichuhi, who replaced Mr Lambert as number two on the SA senate ticket.
