Hundreds queue for Aldi's SA arrival

Hundreds of South Australian bargain hunters, including some who queued overnight, have flocked to the opening of the state's first Aldi stores.

The company opened four stores in Adelaide on Wednesday but has plans to lift that to 50 across SA within the next few years.

Premier Jay Weatherill, who officiated at the opening of the Parafield Gardens store, said Aldi's arrival would deliver a timely boost to the struggling northern suburbs.

"It's a vote of confidence in the South Australian economy and in particular the northern suburbs," the premier told reporters.

The government is considering whether to allow Aldi to sell alcohol in its supermarkets under a comprehensive liquor licensing review process which is currently underway.

Former Supreme Court judge Timothy Anderson will provide recommendations to the government by June 30.

Mr Weatherill said the government's support for the sale of alcohol in supermarkets had been stymied previously by the opposition, who he accused of seeking to protect the hotels industry.
