Train drivers in Adelaide are set to impose work bans in a long-running dispute over pay and conditions.

The bans come into force progressively from Tuesday and are designed to hit the state government rather than commuters.

Rail, Tram and Bus Union workers are upset at a government offer of a 2.5 per cent annual pay rise but are most concerned about demands to drop a no forced redundancies clause from a new enterprise agreement.

They walked off the job for four hours on Monday and haven't ruled out taking more strike action.
