The global aviation industry will descend on Adelaide in 2019 as the city hosts the sector's biggest trade conference.

South Australia has won the right to host the World Routes conference, which attracts more than 3000 delegates from major airlines, airports and other tourism and aviation businesses.

The conference includes international airports pitching new flight routes to airlines.

Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said securing the three-day event for Adelaide was a "huge coup" for SA and was expected to pump $20 million into the local economy.

"We beat the rest of the world to bring this massive convention to Adelaide," he said in a statement on Monday.

"Our investments in recent years in our vibrant city and magnificent regions and our efforts to attract new major events to South Australia are delivering immediate results."

Tourism Australia Managing Director John O'Sullivan said the conference was an important chance to promote Australia to the world on its home ground.

"These are the professionals who play such an important part in deciding where international airlines choose to point their aircraft," he said.
