Man's death at Adelaide train station sparks push for safety upgrades

There are urgent calls for an Adelaide railway station to be upgraded after a man was fatally struck by a train.

Police believe the 40-year-old victim from Smithfield Plains had been trying to cross the tracks between platforms at Munno Para station, when he was hit about 10pm yesterday.

Emergency services worked to save the man, but he died at the scene.

Locals told 9News commuters often avoid the elevated walkway between the platforms and cross the tracks instead, as they rush to catch their trains.

“It happens here a lot, people going across the tracks. It’s shocking,” one person said today.

Others said they fear it's only a matter of time before another person is killed, and are calling for more safety measures to be put in place.

South Australia Transport Minister Stephen Knoll said his department is now working to upgrade pedestrian crossings across the train network.

“We’ll get a review into this and this particular crossing and whether there's anything we can do to improve that situation,” Mr Knoll said.

Authorities said the death is a tragic reminder for everyone to stay safe around railway tracks, and are urging commuters to only cross at designated crossings when it's safe to do so.

The train driver has being offered counselling.

A report into the man's death is being prepared for the coroner.
