Man jailed over police chase

A man who twice drove into a police car and then hit a police officer during a chase in Adelaide last year has been jailed for at least two years for a string of offences.

James Lee Riley, 22, was also driving while disqualified and had a fake number plate fitted to his car.

He pleaded guilty in the South Australian District Court to recklessly creating a risk of harm, aggravated assault and drug trafficking.

Riley's chase with police began after he was pulled over on October 8, 2015.

He crashed into the police patrol car to make his escape and pulled the same manoeuvre a short while after.

At one stage police followed on foot and it was then that Riley drove into one of the officers, causing bruising to his legs.

He was finally arrested at a nearby house but not before threatening police again.

Riley also breached his home detention bail on several occasions by returning positive tests to drugs and in April this year police found three containers of methylamphetamine in his possession.

In sentencing remarks published online this week, Judge Gordon Barrett said Riley's "incursion into crime" was the result of his own drug taking.

He rejected defence requests for a suspended jail term because the seriousness of the offending outweighed Riley's personal circumstances.

The judge imposed a head sentence of four years and three months with a non-parole period of two years and two months.
