The South Australian government will spend more than $9 million on a new extended care facility for emergency patients at Modbury Hospital in Adelaide's northeast.

The specialist eight-bed unit will be built next to the hospital's existing emergency department to allow clinicians to continue observing and evaluating emergency patients who require further care.

Health Minister Jack Snelling says the unit will support 30 full-time jobs and reduce transfers between hospitals when it begins operating in 2018.
