Driver 'remorseful' after being caught using pan as steering wheel

A 32-year-old man has been panned by police after he was allegedly caught using a homemade steering wheel in Adelaide’s CBD this morning.

Police were called to reports of a suspicious red Mazda sedan loitering on Norman Street about 8am today, and approached its driver after it entered the car park of a nearby unit block.

While speaking with the driver, police noticed the man's homemade steering wheel, and that the car's number plate had been altered.

Police said the car was also found to be unregistered and uninsured and had recently been defected, but the defect label had been removed.

The driver told 9NEWS he was “remorseful” and acknowledged the DIY wheel was a “reckless and dangerous” idea.

The man has been charged with driving unregistered, driving uninsured, driving contrary to defect, removing a defect label, altering a number plate and breaching bail.

He was refused bail and will appear at the Adelaide Magistrates Court tomorrow.

His car has been impounded for 28 days.
