SA Labor to double crime victims' payouts

The maximum payment available to victims of crime will double if the South Australian government wins the March election.

Attorney General John Rau said under a re-elected Labor government the maximum compensation available would be $100,000 and payments would be indexed annually.

"Victims often suffer a range of physical and psychological injuries, the impact of which can be devastating for both the victim and for their family," he said on Friday.

"While financial compensation cannot make up for the harm victims suffer, it can assist in their recovery."

For the first time, someone under the age of 18 would be eligible for grief payments.

The maximum compensation payable for grief and funeral expenses would be doubled to a maximum payment of $20,000 for grief and $14,000 for funeral expenses.

"These reforms will also see an increase of around 40 per cent in fees for legal representatives who deal with these matters," he said.
