South Australia's jobless rate has taken a dive after climbing above seven per cent in March.

Latest figures show unemployment fell to 6.3 per cent in April, down from 7.1 per cent the previous month.

That put SA more in step with other states with the national jobless rate steady at 5.8 per cent.

Employment Minister Gail Gago said the fall in the headline rate last month was welcome.

"While the month-to-month figures remain volatile, it is pleasing to see growth in both total employment and the number of people employed full time," Ms Gago said in a statement on Thursday.

Opposition employment spokesman David Pisoni called on the state government to renew its commitment to create 100,000 new jobs.

He said it must also detail how it plans to deliver on that promise before handing down the state budget in June.
