An Adelaide man who reported the theft of hundreds of his model trains and cars is now accused of making a false claim to police.

The 61-year-old man, told police his large collection was stolen during a break-in at a Greenfields property between April 19 and May 10.

The man was interviewed by the media after reporting the alleged loss to police in May.

But on Wednesday, police said he will be summonsed to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court at a later date for making a false report.

"A subsequent investigation by detectives from the Elizabeth Local Service Area allegedly led to the recovery of a large portion of the stolen property and the accused being reported," police said in a statement.
