An Adelaide addiction counsellor has been banned from working in South Australia for allegedly failing to practise in a safe and ethical manner.

Robert Frank Mittiga was banned by the state's health services watchdog after an investigation found he breached the code of conduct for unregistered health practitioners.

Mr Mittiga risks two years in jail or a $10,000 fine if he continues to practise, Health and Community Services Complaints Commissioner Steve Tully said in a statement on Wednesday.
